Firefox OS AppTrain v2 – Training of the Trainers @ Chittagong
[Really sorry for the very delayed blog post]
Chittagong, being the financial capital of Bangladesh and most importantly, home to most of the Bangladeshi Mozillians out of Dhaka, deserved a training for local Moziliians on training new people aboard the Firefox OS Platform. So, I decided to travel to Chittagong to host a training for trainers.
Travel and Staying at Chittagong
Chittagong is about 212 kilometers away from Dhaka and takes a while to travel via bus. I and Maliha started from Dhaka at about 8:00 AM (23rd October, 2014) in the morning and reached the city at about 4:00 PM. While she left for her university campus, I had to book a hotel for myself. Fun facts:
-
This is my first time out of Dhaka in Bangladesh without my family members
-
This is my first time in booking hotels myself
-
Experienced a language dialect which I could barely understand
Training
The training was held on 24th October, at the office premises kindly offered by Muslim Uddin Sumon bhai. We had 19 attendees, which is considered a lot. Because, I got to know that, in Chittagong people tend not to go outside at weekends for purposes other than entertainment and travel! Here are the topics I discussed with them,
-
Introducing Firefox OS – Key points to remember, explaining competition with Android, Open Web Apps.
-
JavaScript key performance issues
-
Troubleshooting common app manifest / syntax issues
-
Finding resources on MDN and beyond
-
Keeping communications alive with participants of training
-
Making wonderful presentations and presenting them
Lunch
After the training, we left for a lunch with the participants at Dhaba, one of the most popular yet affordable Indian cuisine available in Chittagong.
We had delicious Hydrabadi Biriyani there with our fantastic Mozillians.
Next Day
On 25th, I visited the campus of one of the most prominent universities of Bangladesh, Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (formerly BIT, Chittagong). There I met local Mozillians and enthusiasts, and answered their questions regarding Firefox OS, the upcoming app competition arranged by Telenor and troubleshooting there Firefox OS app issues!
Akramul bhaia was really kind to show me around the campus of CUET and introduce me to the enthusiasts studying at CUET.
Goodbye Chittagong
Finally, on 25th October night, I finally had to end the fantastic tour of Chittagong and leave the Bangabandhu Students’ Hall of CUET for Dhaka. I was never really a fan of leaving my home at the capital, but Chittagong was a really beautiful place to be at. Hill tracts, trees, greens, beaches and most importantly, fantastic Mozillians. Love you guys, hoping to come back again one day!
Aftermath
Immediately following my training at Chittagong, the students of CUET held their own 6 day workshop and training on building Firefox OS apps! Check their awesome work out here.
