Hot Take — Hire Engineers Who Don't Care About Design

Hot take: Want to sabotage your small product team? Hire engineers who don’t care at all about design.

Attended a Design Workshop by our product management community at GovTech Singapore!

Wait how did I end up there and why even?

An engineer who understands design, has a high speed bus with their inner designer. Imagine having PCIe lanes for solutioning instead of a USB 1.1 connection. Zap zap!

I feel my job isn’t actually to code, rather it’s to find an optimal solution given my platform, human, process and other set of constraints.

So how aggressively do I cache, where do I cache and how much time should I invest in building it?

Where are my users? What are their patterns of use? Do they recall old data a lot? Can I make them wait a bit? How long till their patience is stretched? Where can I draw the line of compromise?

The workshop was an amazing introduction in my journey to understand design from basic principles. Thank you Chua Khai Shing, Reuben Chan for organizing this!
